Seaford Sea Salt harvested on the Sussex Coast.
The original inspiration for Seaford Sea Salt can be traced back to one warm summer around 50 years ago during the early seventies by our founder Mike Gibbs who, as a schoolboy, was fascinated by both the science of extracting salt from the sea, and the local history behind it.
As decades passed, Mike’s childhood interest in salt was once again rekindled in the nineties when he became interested in high quality sea salts used by many of his favourite restaurants and he became captivated about how exactly this process was achieved, and questions such as why the salt was so much better than standard table salts and why had the practice largely died out in Sussex where it was once a very popular and thriving industry for centuries? And so it began.
Armed with a thirst for knowledge and a quest to produce the finest sea salt in Sussex, Mike spent the next few years experimenting with various salt producing processes and seeking out the best parts of the coast to procure water with the highest salinity he finally achieved his goal in 2019 of producing the purest, cleanest high quality sea salt flakes.
The coastal area between Beachy Head and Black Rock has the good fortune to contain a blend of both North Sea and Atlantic waters which consistently provide a high salinity content and a unique cocktail of natural minerals fed from the salt marshes of the Cuckmere and Ouse river estuaries as well as the beautiful and world famous white seven sisters cliffs.
For this reason Mike then moved his salt harvesting operation to Seaford which is perfectly positioned in the heart of this ideal coastal area and contains many natural salt pans of its own which, up until the end of the fifteenth century have been a source of salt production since the bronze age.
