Organic Pears
Mathew at Oakwood farm, who supplies our apples, also grows pears. His are a variety called Concorde and are a cross between the Comice and the classic Conference, which is what we source from other UK growers when we’ve eaten all his. When stores nationwide run dry, we rely on varieties such as D’Anjou, and update the origin as it changes.
Aside from quite possibly outshining any other part of a cheese course, pear and chocolate is a famously good pairing (no pun intended) in puddings and you really can’t go wrong with a pear and blackberry crumble, or by poaching them with wine or ginger.
Whilst the phrase ‘to go pear shaped’ is not meant to be derogatory towards this fruit (instead referring to things going wonky with pottery or glass blowing), our pears aren’t always the classic pear shape anyway and our favourites are the small ones which don’t seem to have a core or pips so can be eaten whole!
