Lettuce

Metke’s lettuce, which he grows locally at Bore Place, have quite the reputation.
One of our customers recently remarked, regarding a mammoth specimen with endless layers of flouncy, almost dip-dyed leaves, that they felt compelled to kiss it! Now, we grow plenty of our own lettuce for our salad mix: lettuces with spiky ruby leaves, lettuces with oak-shaped, freckled leaves, lettuces that grow like hedges of lime green frizz, but when it comes to providing whole heads- how can we compete with that? 

When it’s too cold for lettuce in the UK, ours come from France and are generally the Batavia variety which is precursor of the well-known Iceberg and has a good balance between crisp and crinkly textures. 

Speaking of France, have you ever tried cooking your lettuce? A common French side dish is petits pois à la Française or braised peas and lettuce and in Chinese cooking it is often stir-fried.
