Crown Prince Squash Piece

Crown Prince squash stores incredibly well, curing like a connoisseur’s favourite cheese or aging like a fine wine. In fact, some of us don’t think you should even consider carving through any of their blue-grey skins to reveal the bright flesh until after Christmas, when they’ve had time to mature and we’ve eaten our way through all the others varieties. 

If kept somewhere dry and warm they really do get sweeter and more flavoursome as time goes on and when you’ve tried one in its prime, tender and honeyish, you’ll probably want to make room in your airing cupboard to hoard a few next season. We always make sure we stockpile several tonnes though, and when Metske delivers them from Bore Place it heralds the beginning of autumn. 

As they can swell to such enormous sizes, which we simply can’t cram into our boxes, we often supply them in chunks. Kept refrigerated. these should last a good couple of days but are best enjoyed sooner rather than later.
