It’s late summer! And so far what a funny one it’s been. From extreme downpours to extreme temperatures the weather seems ever more unpredictable and the plants such as our courgettes respond to this as we go from glut to slim pickings one week to the next. However, as customers, you’ll have benefitted from this as we put freebies or bigger portions in your boxes. The propagation glasshouse is full of seedlings to be planted into our tunnels for Winter which always takes us by surprise but as always, we have to plan ahead. Winter for us is actually when we have most customers and so we put a lot of emphasis on ensuring we have plenty of produce in stock for this. period. Which leads to this exciting news......

If you’ve been a regular reader of these updates you may remember it has long been in ambition of ours to acquire a little more land so we can grow even more vegetables! Those of you that have visited the farm might now be wondering what on earth we’d want to give ourselves more work for. Indeed, people are often surprised about how few of us there are here (it works out as a good few acres each to look after!). However, we’re on a mission to fill our veg boxes with as much local produce as possible, guaranteeing freshness and minimal food miles.

Until recently we haven’t had enough room to grow things like cauliflowers and cabbages which you can only pick once, compared to our trusty kales which we harvest multiple times and a therefore are an excellent use of precious soil space. Even though we can buy these from other farms in England, often Devon or Herefordshire, we’d much rather provide Sussex produce, grown on your doorstep.

The exciting news is we have recently started renting another field from our favourite potato grower in Isfield, thanks Crispin! The crop is looking incredibly promising, the rain straight after planting was ideal in getting the crop established and off to a good start and although its more work, it has not overwhelmed us. Cauliflowers, cabbages and broccoli may not have the glamour of summer produce like aubergines, and unfairly may be associated with medieval peasantry or nightmarishly mushy childhood meals but they’re absolutely something to look forward to...we certainly are!!!
